The SIG Sauer P228 is a compact version of the Sig Sauer P226, chambered for the 9x19mm Parabellum.
The P228 was introduced in 1988 for commercial sale and was used by the U.S. Secret Service until it was replaced by the newer Sig Sauer P229 in .357 SIG. It is also used by the U.S. military under the designation of M11. Production originally ceased when SIG Sauer introduced the 9x19mm variant of the P229. However, the company recently introduced the M11A1, the civilian version of the P228, which is equipped with a high-capacity 15-round magazine. The P228 can be differentiated from the P226 by its shorter slide and barrel.
