A sports utility vehicle (SUV) is a type of automobile.
Definition[]
The Merriam-Webster defines the term "sports utility vehicle" as "a rugged automotive vehicle similar to a station wagon but built on a light-truck chassis". The term "SUV" is defined separately, as "a large vehicle that is designed to be used on rough surfaces but that is often used on city roads or highways". The SUV acronym is commonly used to describe a majority of vehicles with "available all-wheel drive and raised ground clearance".
On Criminal Minds[]
When the BAU is summoned to help the local police departments on cases, they utilize full-size SUVs that provide transportation, mobility, and structure. These are usually 2000-2015 Chevrolet Suburbans painted black with government license plates, although in earlier seasons they have sometimes used 2000-2007 GMC Yukon XL's, both vehicles being based on a similar chassis.
In "The Inspiration", a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe is used to chase down a suspected unsub. The SUV is similar to the Suburban in multiple aspects, save for size, by which the latter is more dominant.
