The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is a revolver designed by Smith & Wesson (often shortened to S&W)
History[]
The S&W 29 was designed in 1955 for the use of S&W's new .44 Magnum cartridge, which they made in response to the success of sharpshooter Elmer Keith (who specialized in using revolvers chambered in .44 Special). The S&W 29 was intended for use in hunting large and dangerous sport, in contrast to smaller-caliber revolvers used for self-defense. During its time, it was hailed as the most powerful hand-held gun ever created. Production has slowed considerably in the past few decades. The S&W 29 is also recognized as the weapon used by Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry franchise.
The Smith & Wesson 629 Performance Center is a stainless steel variant of the Model 29.
