In his sophomore year at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, Sander played shortstop on the school baseball team. In his senior year, he was a tenth-round draft pick for the California Angels, and was accepted after graduating from Nathan Hale High in 1973. Though he turned down a football scholarship from Washington State University, he had an unsuccessful season with the Angels and was eventually released from the team.

Afterwards, Sander played one season for the Seattle Rainiers, after which he accepted a football scholarship from the University of Puget Sound. After quitting the job, he drove to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a shipyard hand, log-cabin builder, bartender, and car dealer to make ends meet. Finally, he was able to get an acting agent at some point.

Sander's first significant work in the Los Angeles acting scene was in print advertising, including being the "Winston man" for the Winston Cigarettes brand. After starting a career in acting, he became known as the character "Captain" Jimmy Wennick on the short-lived 2000 TV series Tucker. His other TV credits include roles on Criminal Minds, The Golden Girls, Grace Under Fire, Home Improvement, Malcolm in the Middle, Rules of Engagement, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, Silicon Valley, The Newsroom, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hunter, Marvin Marvin, and The Big Bang Theory, among others.
