Anita Roycewood (née Weld) was a serial killer and abductor who appeared in Season Five of Criminal Minds.

Background Edit

Not much is known about Anita, other than her family owned a funeral home. She eventually married Roger Roycewood, an electrician. In 1999, the two, for unspecified reasons, abducted Karla Hartaway from Garrisonville, Virginia, and kept her as if she were her own child. They repeated this abduction process once every following year. Whenever any of the children grew too old or ambivalent, Anita would kill them by drugging them and burning their unconscious bodies in the funeral home's crematorium.

Real-Life Comparison Edit

Anita's habit of cremating her victims and disposing their ashes seems to be a vague reference to presumed serial killer Helmuth Schmidt. Also, Schmidt's wife was named Anita, and Helen Schmidt was briefly suspected of being an accomplice, which appear to be nods toward Anita. Anita is also very similar to serial killer Gilles de Rais, who would also cremate his underage victims (although he did it post-mortem while Anita did it ante-mortem to kill them) and dispose of their ashes with the help of accomplices.

Anita also shares some traits with serial killer Dean Corll, most notably the scene of her death. Like Anita, Corll used two submissive male accomplices to provide new victims for him, one of whom, Elmer Wayne Henley, was an abducted victim himself. Corll was about to rape and kill two victims provided by Henley, when Henley pointed a gun at him and told him to stop, much like when Anita was about to kill the victims she held captive before Charlie pointed a gun at her. Also like Anita, Corll laughed off the threat and tried to retrieve the gun before being shot and killed. Anita's husband being an electrician might be another nod to Corll, who worked as an electrician at the time of his death.
